Food Waste Rescue & Recovery Services

Recently, aGRO has learned of the overall food that is lost or wasted in Canada sits at approximately 58% per year. When our founder came to learn this fact, she was outraged. Why do almost 50% of Canadian farmers need to struggle with a second job, while over half of the food they produce just ends up going to waste? Moreover, why are one in eight Canadian households experiencing food insecurity while 11.2 million metric tonnes of this lost and wasted food could be saved every year?

As such, Victoria decided she needed to do something. The application of the disposal/upcycling model from the Beer to Steer Spent Grain Removal program to other businesses in the food and beverage industry launched at the end of 2020. First it started with a little cidery and aGRO repurposing its apple waste into snacks for pigs to then working with the local restaurant chain Red’s Diner and taking their vegetarian food waste to be used as livestock feed supplements where possible. aGRO now hopes to expand to larger corporations that are involved with food processing and distribution to help them manage their waste in the most impactful ways for the community.

The Food Waste Rescue & Recovery Service is intended to replace or compliment a firm’s existing composting service and food donation program.

aGRO is partnered with food charities to sort, clean and take damaged food parties to hungry people. In terms of food waste recovery, we will aim on upcycling as many food items as possible to be used for people, then livestock feed, and finally composting. Food packaging will be managed and responsibly recycled within the service as well.

The goal of our offerings is to help follow The Federal Government’s Solution to Food Waste & Loss!

Partners & Customers

aGRO is agile and responsive to our needs as a microbrewery which is very important because our needs change frequently. We have been very pleased with the service and the Ross family is a pleasure to deal with.
We have recommended aGRO to a number of different breweries. They provide a better service than any other grain service in the city and their commitment to localism is very important to us.

We like spent grain because the protein is high and helps to improve the quality of feed if stretching poor feed is all that’s available. Also, cost is a factor. We have noticed the animals are quieter because we are pail feeding them every day and we increased our weaning weights although we can’t prove that it was spent grain. Our sheep are crazy about spent grain. While our cattle really like it, the sheep stampede to get it. We believe that spent grain is a real asset to our feeding program. We feel it improves the milk quality to the calves and helps the mamas maintain their condition.
